Outstanding collection of short stories depicting the hardscrabble and harshness of farm life circa 1940’s, 1950’s. The stories content varies on subject matters, all possess elements of farm life. One story we see the world through a little girls eyes as she attempts to comprehend its cruelty, so unexplainable to a young child. We read of a father attempting to gain the love of his family, specifically his independent daughter. An extended story explores forbidden love, divided by class, war, duty. Of course we have the story of Widow Smalls, a widow left to manage her large farm on her own. Hired help arrives and her future is bright despite her husband’s family making her efforts even more of a challenge.
Well crafted stories, interesting themes, fascinating characters. Quite captivating collection. Will definitely read more from this talented author.
