A young woman on the verge of taking her vows to become a nun.
A desperate flight from a murderous massacre.

One honorable man comes to her rescue.
Another becomes her nemesis and captor.
And a life and death search to reunite with her one true love.

Dramatic in every way. The Novice is an intricately tangled love story with the object of desire Sara. Sara is forceful, independent, a woman of substance especially given the brutality of the Middle Ages, and I’m merely scratching the surface.

I have an affinity towards plucky, strong fiercely independent women, no surprise I am a fan of Sara’s from the get go. She’s brutally honest, full of moxie and demonstrates a mettle of unimaginable strength in mind, body, and spirit. She singlehandedly battles the enemy head on, lovingly relinquishes her independence to an honorable man, and endures the brute force of an evil man. No doubt Sara is a female protagonist you can’t help notice and admire. Her forwardness appeals to you and attachment grows as the story continues.

The narrative is exciting and suspenseful. The romance angle is full of its share of highs and lows, toss in tragedy for good measure and it’s an enthralling tale. Despite it being a quasi love triangle, there are a few twists making this an above average love triangle. A white lie Sara insists on carrying out, leads to an untold amount of drama and tradgty.

Patzer vividly depicts scenes, dives in to characterization and produces a story that’s very well balanced. The Novice is more than a complicated love story, it’s the story of one woman’s enduring strength, will and amazing courage. Riveting story, my only faultfinding, Patzer is comprehensive on all levels, more than details, she pulls you into the narrative with exact specifics, welcomed but at times it dragged the narrative. I’m a fan of minutiae, at times her impeccable eye causes a noticeable lacuna, leading to loss of readers focus.

Patzer composes a passionate narrative with a memorable and admirable female protagonist. In all certitude historical fictional fans will enjoy The Novice, a novel comprising more than love.
